À la fin du XVIIIe siècle en Allemagne, dans un débat d'une extraordinaire densité conceptuelle autour de l'héritage kantien, la philosophie s'autodétermine comme système de la liberté. "Le temps est venu" pour la philosophie transcendantale d'achever la Révolution copernicienne en accomplissant le système du savoir où l'absolue liberté accède au concept, à la claire conscience de soi. L'idéalisme est la philosophie première où la liberté se pensant elle-même s'affirme comme identité absolue du penser et de l'être, quitte à rencontrer la scission, la finitude de la conscience comme le problème majeur de la raison. Parmi les nouveaux "amis des idées", le jeune Schelling, dans la double inspiration de Spinoza d'une part, de Kant et de Fichte d'autre part, se saisit pour la première fois des questions radicales, métaphysiques, qu'il ne cessera plus de méditer : le commencement absolu, le "réellement réel", l'énigme du fait du monde et de toute vie finie. Engagé en d'infatigables transformations, c'est bien pourtant sous la loi de cette résolution juvénile, dans l'esprit de ce commencement magistral, que le système de la liberté devait dans le futur se tenir.

The influence of Spinoza on Post-Kantian Idealism has been widely acknowledged. The influence of Spinozism on Hegel has already been studied in some detail and Hegel himself wrote extensively on elements of Spinoza's views. However, detailed research and study concerning the influence of Spinoza on Fichte and Schelling, the other two great Post-Kantian Idealists, is still to be carried out in the Anglo-American tradition. Commentators in this tradition acknowledge the influence of some of Spinoza's views on Fichte and Schelling's respective projects but fail to provide a detailed account. This work attempts to help fill the gap in this area by providing a detailed study of the influence of Spinozism on these two seminal philosophers and demonstrate that Fichte and Schelling's philosophy should not be read solely in the light of Kantianism but also of Spinozism. This allows us to uncover some hidden facets embedded in their systems and gain a better understanding of their philosophy. Fichte and Schelling are the bridge between Kant and Hegel and therefore the exploration of further influences in their work is of great value.
